The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Peter Obi, has called on editors to demand issue-based campaigns from politicians as the best way to secure a free and transparent 2027 elections.
Mr Obi, who made the appeal on the second day of the 22nd All Nigeria Editors Conference (ANEC) in Enugu, emphasized the media’s vital role in shaping a stable and united society.
He praised journalists for their contributions to national development, and called on them to stay focused and mindful of Nigeria’s future while performing their duties.
Obi stressed the need for a level playing field, warning that any action preventing candidates or parties from campaigning undermines democracy and tolerance.
He appealed for a peaceful, conducive environment as the election approaches, saying it is essential to making the country work.
While setting his record as former governor of Anambra State, Obi insisted that he left no debt and instead left considerable funds for the state. He dismissed reports of personal animosity with the Anambra Governor, Prof.
Charles Soludo, saying he respects the office and has no reason to denigrate anyone, “I can’t abuse any person. I don’t have reasons to do so. I give anybody his dues.”
Obi asked editors to thoroughly vet candidates’ backgrounds and character, arguing that leaders’ integrity reflects on the nation. He also urged journalists to push candidates to address citizens directly rather than through intermediaries.
He advised elected officials to prioritize people-centered projects and immediate needs over elitist programes.
