Resident Doctors at the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital in Akure, the Ondo State capital, have begun an indefinite strike over non payment of their salaries by the state government.
The doctors said the strike became neccessary in view of failure of the governmentt to address their demands which included payment of the 4 months salary arrears being owed by the government.
The Indefinite strike comes one week after a 3 -day warning strike by the doctors to draw government’s attention to the unpaid salary arrears.
The Acting Chairman of the association,Dr Sanni Oriyomi said that apart from the salaries being owed doctors, the Ondo Health sector was facing lack of doctors and lack of accomodation as doctors take care of their own accomodation.
According to him, other staff in the health sector were being paid regularly and wondered why resident doctors should be treated unfairly.
