The Nigerian Senate is advocating for a bill to establish a commission solely responsible for conducting local government elections in the country.
The bill which scaled through passed first reading on Thursday was sponsored by Sen. Sani Musa.
The Bill is titled “Local Government Independent Electoral Commission (Establishment) Bill, 2024.” .
Presently, the conduct of local government elections lies with States Electoral Commissions.
The Bill, when passed to second reading and to law would diverse powers from State Governors to assume full responsibilities of the conduct of local government elections
