United States on Wednesday, rejected Nigeria’s candidate to headship of the World Trade Organisation WTO, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, despite support of her candidacy by allies of the North American country.
The WTO and 104 countries had waited for the United States to endorse the proposal of Okonjo-Iweala to emerge as the consensus candidate of the Trade Organisation but Trump whose business interests overides America’s sane faculty of reasoning rejected the pride of Nigeria.
Trump has ernoumous investments in South Korea dating back to more than two decades.
His business empire,Trump World Seoul , comprises six properties of which each has not less than 41 storey building ( skyscraper) jointly owned by South Korean Government and developed throughout Seoul the capital city and neighbouring cities of Daegu and Busan makes his support for a Nigerian difficult.
Besides that,s Trump’s luxury hotels and resorts scattered around South Korea.
It was also learnt that the American President whose country is only a few days away to either pick a new president or return him is ruled by his business interest and nothing else.
Recall that Trump held a summit with North Korea’s Leader,Kim Jong-Un at Metropole Hotel,Hanoi Vietnam, between February 27 and 28,2019.
Trump reportedly opened a hotel in Pyonyang, the North Korean capital a day after the summit.
Okonjo-Iweala’s challenger, Yoo Myung-hee ,is the current Trade Minister of South Korea whose assignment directly or indirectly protects business interests of the likes of President Trump.
The former finance minister is required to receive the endorsement of all 164 members to be elected the Director General of the WTO.,
For now, the Nigerian candidate still waxed stronger as she has received further endorsements, the latest being the panel of the World Trade Organisation,
However, the politics of the WTO is said to be perfected by Washington and would depend on the outcome of the US election scheduled for November 3
If the election goes in the way of the Democratic party candidate,Joe Biden, there is hope for Okonjo-Iweala’s dream of heading the WTO to materialize, however if it goes the way of the RepublicanTrump,It might end as a tall dream even as she shares part nationality with him
Trump’s administration had inflicted similar injury on Nigeria’s Akinwumi Adesina of the African Development Bank.
It took the grace of God and Adesina’s transparency to absolve him of the volumes of spurious allegations against him.
