Former Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Dr. Austin Tam-George, has described the impeachment proceeding initiated by the House of Assembly against Governor Siminalayi Fubara as a purely political plot, insisting that the action targets a governor who has delivered people-focused policies, unlike his predecessor’s administration which, according to him, failed to pay pensions for eight years.
Tam-George who spoke on Arise News argued that the Rivers State House of Assembly members loyal to former governor Nyesom Wike lacked any genuine legal basis for the move to impeach Fubara. He maintained that the allegations were designed to frustrate the governor’s reform agenda and weaken his growing public support across the state.
The former commissioner faulted the Assembly’s demand that Governor Fubara re-present the 2025 budget, describing it as an extraordinary and unjustified request.
He explained that the budget had already been prepared, vetted by the National Assembly, and signed into law by the president, making any further presentation unnecessary and unconstitutional.
Tam – George further compared the records of Wike and Fubara administrations, stating that while he served under Wike’s government, the state struggled to pay the ₦30,000 minimum wage.
In contrast, Fubara now pays salaries above the national minimum wage and settles pensions consistently, a responsibility he said the former governor neglected throughout his eight-year tenure.
He added that the impeachment effort would fail, stressing that Governor Fubara enjoys massive grassroots support and that attempts to undermine his record and political future are bound to collapse.
“You know, as I said, I served in the previous administration; we couldn’t even pay 30,000 naira minimum wage. But today, Governor Fubara is paying even higher than the national minimum wage.”Tam – George said.
