
A Federal High Court in Uyo has convicted and sentenced Senator Bassey Albert, the governorship candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), to 42 years in prison for corruption.
Albert,a serving Senator representing Akwa Ibom North East District was prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.( EFCC) over bribes.
He was accused of receiving bribes of 12 cars worth N254million from an oil marketer,Olajide Omokore while serving as commissioner for Finance in Akwa Ibom State between 2010-2014
Albert was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP)before he defected months ago to the YPP, where he secured the party’s ticket for the 2023 governorship election.
He was a major challenger to the PDP candidate, Umo Eno, in next year’s governorship election in Akwa Ibom State and vocal in the revelation of Governor Emmanuel Udom’s receipt of over N200 billion 13 percent derivation arrears approved by President Muhammadu Buhari.
He is said to have been taken to the Ikot Ekpene prisons to serve his sentence .
