Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, on December 23, 2025, granted a state pardon to Sunday Jackson, a farmer who had spent about 11 years on death row after being convicted for killing a herdsman during an attack on his farm.
The pardon was granted under the governor’s constitutional prerogative of mercy as part of a Christmas and New Year clemency exercise.
A statement by Chief Press Secretary to the Governor,Humwashi Wonosikou, said Jackson, who is in Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre has been pardoned alongside Joseph Eugene from the Medium Security Custodial Centre,Yola and Maxwell Ibrahim serving at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kaduna.
The decision was based on recommendations from the Adamawa State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy
Governor Fintiri also commuted the remaining sentences of five others, citing good conduct.
Fintiri’s pardon comes after a member of the US House of Representatives,Riley Moore called on the Nigerian government to pardon the farmer who was sentenced to death for killing a herdsman in his farm.
