The unending political imbroglio took another turn on Thursday as the 26 lawmakers led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule sat to discuss the business of the day
The plenary session which was held at the auditorium of the Assembly Quarters on Aba Road came barely 48 hours after an exparte order restrained the lawmakers from duties and affirmed Edison Ehie as Speaker of the state Assembly
On Wednesday, the Rivers state government demolished the entire House of Assembly complex and dedicated a place in government house for the Edison Ehie – led group to entertain the 2024 Appropriation Bill which he, Fubara presented before them.
Earlier on Wednesday,it was gathered that as the demolition was going on the Ehie group declared vacant, 27 seats of lawmakers in the Amaewhule group for defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). though one of the defectors later had a change of mind and returned to the Peoples Democratic Party PDP.
At plenary on Thursday, the lawmaker representing Andoni constituency, Ofiks Kagbang, moved a motion of urgent public importance condemning the demolition of the House of Assembly which was unanimously adopted by the House.
The House also adopted a report presented to the Speaker by another member,Major Jack, on the Rivers State Local Government Amendment Bill .
Speaking on the bill, Amaewhule said when passed into law, the Bill
will eliminate the governor’s power to dissolve Local Government Executives.
The defection of the lawmakers have been interpreted by learned personalities and laymen alike.
While the lawmakers stated that their defection was motivated by division at the National level, some legal luminaries and party members disagreed claiming that the PDP had no issues of division and hoped that the court would soon clear the ambiguity .
Our political history well repeat it self in River State.
