
Saturday ‘s 6.8 magnitude earthquake in Central Morocco has killed no fewer than 1300 people .
According to the US Geological survey, the wondrous epicentre was in the High Atlas Mountains, 71km (44 miles) south-west of Marrakesh, at a depth of 18.5km.
The earthquake struck at 23:11 local time, followed by a 4.9 aftershock 19 minutes later.
Morocco ‘s Interior Ministry said people died in the provinces of Marrakesh an economic centre,Al -Haouz, Quarzaazate,Azilal Chichaoua and other areas .
Hospitals in Marrakesh are said to be flooded with injured people and there are also reports of families trapped under the rubble of their homes in the city, and damage to parts of the Medina, a medieval city and Unesco World heritage Site.
Its impact was felt in Rabat the capital some 350kms away as well as Casablanca and Essaouira.
The quake was also felt in neighbouring Algeria, but officials said it had not caused any damage or casualties.
World leaders have reacted to the tragic occurrence in Morocco.
Speaking at the G20 summit in Delhi, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the
international community would come to Morocco’s aid.
In his message, Nigeria ‘s President,Bola Ahmed Tinubu commiserated with the king of Morocco saying Nigeria will continue to stand in solidarity with the people of Morocco.
In a statement issued by his Media Adviser, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Tinubu condoled with all families who lost loved ones and all those otherwise affected by this tragedy, while wishing a full and swift recovery to those who were injured.
The president assured the government and people of Morocco that the heartfelt prayers and thoughts of Nigerians are with them during this difficult moment of tragedy.
“In the face of this adversity, Nigeria will continue to stand in solidarity with Morocco as they recover, rebuild and come out stronger than ever from this unfortunate event,”
