As part of activities to celebrate the International Day of the Girl Child today, the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Rebisi Kingdom has distributed free reusable sanitary kits to 200 young girls at the Government Girls Secondary School, Rumuokwuta., Port Harcourt.
President of the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Rebisi Kingdom, Chris Ugechi said the club took a fierce initiative to empower, create awareness about feminine hygiene as well as provide support for 200 girl-child to understand the importance of hygiene in their everyday life.
Chris Ugechi said the gesture is part of the club’s aim at empowering the girl child under the Rotary International Focus Area – Disease Prevention and Treatment.
“The Rotary Club of PH Rebisi Kingdom in partnership with Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria, Rivers State Branch organised a “Talk on Personal Hygiene” and Provision of Reusable Sanitary PADs for the Girl Child at Government Girls Secondary School, Rumuokwuta, PH. This project is done along side distribution of one hundred and fifty back to School back packs and writing materials, provision of school uniforms for sixteen pupils whose uniforms have really torn and worn out. We also planted some economic trees to protect the environment”, Rotarian Ugechi said.
On his part, the Assistant Governor zone twenty-six, Rotary International District 9141, Moses Irua, said the club remains committed to serve towards changing lives, which is why it believes that empowering the girl child starts with empowering them with good health.
“Rotary international takes the affairs of the girl child seriously, that’s why Club’s have been charged to ensure that they carry out empowerment projects for the girl-child. We intend to boost their confidence and help them make better decisions for tomorrow”.
The Club’s service project chair, Bose Elias said the sum of N180,000.00 Education Support for the Girl Child in partnership with OKENZE EMEKA ANYASO EDUCATION FOUNDATION was given to one Favor-Chika Chidubem while the sum of N350,000.00 Economic Empowerment was given to the Mother towards sustaining Education of the Girl.
