An appeal has gone to the three tiers of government and other private organizations in Nigeria to recruit female drivers in order to address the huge shortage existing in the road transportation industry.
Making this plea is Ambassador Eunice Odeghe, President, Female Drivers Association of Nigeria (FEDAN) at its 2021 National Conference and Award ceremony, held in Abuja recently.
Ambassador Odeghe explained that studies revealed that a shortage of 80,000 drivers existed across the road transportation industry in this year alone, adding that women should be recruited to reduce the shortage.
She, therefore encouraged all women, both young and old to take up the business of transportation as a skill and economic venture to improve their family living standards.
The Guest Speaker on the occasion, Dr. Plangsat B. Dayil, Ag. Director, Center for Gender and Women Studies, University of Jos, urged the three tiers of government to further regulate the business of transportation in the country so as to reduce abuses by unauthorized groups.
She called on policy makers to involve more women in decision making processes in order to cater for women interests in all ramifications.
Dr. Dayil also appealed to public infrastructure designers to make women friendly designs.
