A non governmental group,Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project and others have sued the Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed and the National Broadcasting Commission for imposing a fine of N3million each on Channels Television,AIT and Arise TV for their coverage of the#EndSARS protest.
The plaintiffs are asking the court to set aside the arbitrary, illegal and unconstitutional fines of N9 million from the media houses and
any other penal sanction unilaterally imposed by the NBC and Mr Lai Mohammed .
The plaintiffs based their argument on Section 2(n) of the NBC ACT and the Broadcasting Code which they noted are oppressive and “consistently used by the NBC and Lai Mohammed to suppress the watchdog roles of independent media, and to violate Nigerians human rights to freedom of expression to
disseminate and receive information and hold their government and public officials to account.”
They also want the court to set aside the N50MILLION fine the NBC and Mohammed imposed on Nigerian Info a radio station for airing the views of a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria,Dr Obadiah Mailafia.
