Zulum says Boko Haram deradicalisation not working, asks FG to devolve terrorists prosecution to states

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, has said that the concept of deradicalisation of Boko Haram terrorists is not successful as expected.

Delivering a speech at the North East Governors Forum meeting at the Governmentt House, Bauchi on Wednesday, Zulum told his colleagues that “the issue of deradicalisation needed to be urgently reviewed or modified as those who have been captured or wilfully surrendered themselves to the authorities often go back to rejoin the terror group after carefully studying the various security arrangements in their host communites during the reintegration process.”

He said “the host communites where the reintegration process is going on usually resent the presence of Boko Haram terrorists, even if they have been de-radicalised, because of the despicable and attrocious activities they have committed in the past.

“So the idea of de- radicalization as currently being implemented needs to be reviewed because the main goals and the underlying objectives behind the initiative are not being achieved.adding the last option is to immediately prosecute the terrorists,in accordance with the Terrorism Act.”

He advised the Federal Government” to devolve the powers of the Minister of Justice and Attorney- General of the Federation to state Attorney -Generals in order to facilitate the prosecution of terrorists saying the current situation where only the Attorney- General of the Federation is absolutely empowered to prosecute terrorists which quite often, results in avoidable delays was not right as Justice delayed is justice denied”

The Borno governor also called for regional security outfit as other regions while also calling for multinatioanal security forces and mercenaries to fight the insurgents.
