The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of a retired senior military officer, Major General Rabe Abubakar, while in the captivity of bandits.

Describing the incident as tragic, the government said his death was a major loss not only to his family and Katsina State but also to the country.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr Nasiru Mu’azu the government described the incident as tragic saying it is a major loss not only to his family and Katsina State but also to the country.

“The deceased retired general died a natural death from complications of diabetes and hypertension,” the statement said.

The government noted that efforts had been made by the state government and security agencies to secure his release before the incident ended in tragedy.

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda expressed deep condolences to the family of the deceased, describing the development as a dark moment for the state.

He said the incident was another reminder of the need to intensify the fight against criminal elements disturbing peace and security in Katsina and other parts of the country.

Radda also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working closely with the Federal Government and security agencies to ensure that those behind the abduction were brought to justice.

The governor assured residents that the state government remained determined to eliminate banditry and protect lives and property across Katsina State.

The government also prayed for the repose of the soul of the late retired major general and urged citizens to continue supporting security agencies in the fight against insecurity.

On May 30, 2026, Abubakar and his wife, Hajiya Amina Abubakar, were ambushed and abducted by suspected armed bandits while traveling in a Peugeot 406 near Zakin Baure village in the Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State. Their driver reportedly survived the attack after sustaining gunshot injuries.
