
The Kebbi State Police Command says at least 33 people were killed when insurgents popularly called Lakurawa militants invaded some communities in an attempt to rustle cattle but met resistance from residents.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Command’s Spokesman,SP Bashir Usman, disclosed that sustained area patrols were ongoing across affected communities to restore normalcy.
” The Command deeply regrets the loss of thirty – three innocent lives and extends its heartfelt condolences to the families affected and the entire Arewa community” the statement said.
According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that suspected armed Lakurawa militants entered Biu District on February 18 to rustle cattle
They invaded Mamunu,Awasaka,Tungan Tsoho,Makangara,Kanzo,Gorun Naidal and Dan Mai Ago but the residents mobilised and resisted the attack resulting in a fatal confrontation with the heavily armed assailants.
The command urged members of the public not to be involved in direct engagement with armed groups warning that”such actions pose serious risks”
