Amid escalating tension following insecurity, Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect, citing health reasons.
In a letter dated December 1 and addressed to President Bola Tinubu, Badaru formally tendered his resignation.
The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga said President Tinubu has accepted Badaru’s resignation and expressed appreciation for his contributions to national security and public service. The President is expected to notify the Senate of a replacement later in the week.
Badaru, 63, served as Jigawa State governor between 2015 and 2023 before joining the Tinubu administration as Defence Minister on August 21, 2023.
Reports indicate that though Badaru cited health challenge as the cause of his resignation, there is more to it.
Shortly before the resignation of Badaru was made public, the former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa visited President Tinubu at the presidential villa .
He is said to be waiting in the wing as possible replacement for the former Jigawa State Governor.
