WHO Declares Nigeria Ebola-Free After Evacuation of Patient

By Barth Ikiebe

The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa, Dr Mohamed Janabi, says Nigeria currently has no Ebola cases following the medical evacuation of the patient and her husband to Switzerland.

In a statement posted on his official X account on Monday, Janabi said Nigeria would continue monitoring 52 contacts, while Switzerland would manage the patient and follow up with her husband.

He said the evacuation took place earlier this morning and noted that both the patient and her husband were Swiss citizens.

According to Janabi, the patient was clinically stable after Nigerian medical teams managed her through the acute phase of the illness and stabilised her condition.

He congratulated the Federal Government, health workers, clinicians, emergency responders and other partners involved in the Ebola response, describing the outcome as a remarkable achievement.

Janabi said the successful management of the patient demonstrated Africa’s expertise, resilience and public health leadership, particularly when countries work together to respond to health emergencies.

Despite the evacuation, he stressed that vigilance remained critical and urged continued monitoring of contacts and other response measures.

He said Nigeria would continue to closely monitor 52 contacts, while Switzerland would take responsibility for the patient’s ongoing care and monitor contact number 53—her husband.
