Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has ordered an immediate end to the activities of a group reportedly operating under the name Hisbah in parts of Jos North Local Government Area of the state.
Mutfwang declared the activities illegal and directed security agencies to arrest and investigate persons involved, with those found guilty to be prosecuted.
The directive follows reports that the group has allegedly been promoting Sharia law, intimidating and harassing residents, extorting people and imposing unauthorised rules in parts of the state.
In a statement issued by his office, Mutfwang warned all persons involved in the reported activities to desist or face arrest and prosecution.
The governor stressed that Plateau State has only one recognised legal system, as recognised nationwide, and one legitimate authority.
He maintained that no individual or group has the right to assume powers that have not been conferred on it by law.
Mutfwang consequently urged security agencies in the state to take necessary action to enforce the directive and prevent further activities by the group.
