The Federal Government has announced an emergency stakeholders meeting on 22nd April 2026, to suspend the planned airfare hike and airline shutdown in Nigeria as aviation fuel known as JetA1 rises above N3000 per litre from N900 .
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, made this known in a letter to airline operators dated April 16, 2026.
The announcement comes shortly after Airline Operators of Nigeria AON threatened to shut down operations over the 300 percent increase jn Jetfuel
The AON said its members now pay about N3,300 per litre of aviation fuel, up from about N900 paid for the same volume in February.
But,in what appears to be a timely response to the airline operators, Keyamo assured that the Nigerian government would intervene to avoid collapse of the sector.
“I wish to formally assure you that the concerns raised by your members have received the full attention of the federal government and we shall take immediate steps to address the issues.
“Accordingly, a high-level emergency stakeholders’ meeting has been scheduled to be held on Wednesday, April 22nd, 2026, in Abuja, bringing together all relevant stakeholders and regulatory authorities with a view to achieving a prompt, practical, and sustainable resolution. The venue and time will be communicated in due course.”
Nigeria has been grappling with a series of issues in the aviation sector ranging from high cost of jetfuel to bird strikes. The cost of Jet A 1 has been compounded by the ongoing US/ Israel war on Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.which accounts for about 20 percent of global oil consumption.
