Law School PH Campus: Senate Committee Visits Site,Endorses Facility

.. As Wike advises against project proliferation

The Senate Committee on Judiciary made quick its promise to visit the Port Harcourt Campus of the Nigerian Law School as the Committee led by the Chairman, Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele undertook a tour of the Law School which is one of the legacy projects of the Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike .

Bamidele had in his opening remark at a public hearing on Legal Education Amendment Bill on November 16,2021 assured of his preparedness to visit the Port Harcourt Campus to assess ongoing construction work.

Speaking during the tour, Senator Bamidele who noted with satisfaction the spate of work , the standard and resources committed to it said that without any doubt that the Port Harcourt Campus has come to stay.

‘ From what we have seen here,we have no doubt whatsoever that a campus of the Nigerian Law School in Port Harcourt has come to stay.

Governor Wike who hosted the visiting senators in Government House, urged against proliferation of projects noting it has become a tradition in the country.

The Governor’s statement followed a Bill sponsored by Senator Smart Adeyemi ( APC Kogi) which is intended to create at least two campuses of the Nigerian Law School in each geopolitical zone .

Adeyemi’s Bill which came after approval was given to the Rivers State Government is seen as a calculated effort to undermine the good intention of the state government and was dismissed by the Law Bodies in the country.

Wike thanked the Senators for coming to the state to have a first hand knowledge of the situation saying it was an expression of objectivity and fairness.

” I thank you for coming. That shows your objectivity, that shows how fair you are, at least to give everybody opportunity to see that there is already a Law School in Port Harcourt. We are not saying they should establish ,It is already there.’

The N16 billion project located along mile 4 and christened Nabo Graham Douglas Campus was approved by the Federal Government in June with a letter of approval from the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami and presented to Wike by the Director General of the Nigerian Law School,Professor Isa Huyatu Chiroma at the Government House, Port Harcourt.
