Former President Goodluck Jonathan has clarified that the incident that occurred in Guinea Bissau was not a coup but a stage-managed plot by President Umaro Embalo to thwart democratic governance.
The Former President, who addressed the media in Abuja, stated that a transparent electoral process was hijacked, urging the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to rise up.
Jonathan was among other international observers at the thwarted elections in Guinea- Bissau
Embalo and his main challenger, Fernando Dias had both claimed victory in last Sunday’s general elections.
Embalo 53, is a former army general who served as prime minister from 2016 to 2018. He was seeking to become Guinea – Bissau s first president in 30 years to win a second term.
Embalo dissolved parliament which was controlled by the opposition after the 2019-2023 legislative elections, and refused to allow it to sit since December 2023.
