Senator Godswiill Akpabio has been elected the President of the 10th Senate.

Akpabio a former Minister of Niger Delta and ex-governor of Akwa Ibom State, polled 63 votes while his rival, Abdul’aziz Abubakar Yari, a former governor of Zamfara State polled 46 votes in a keenly contested election

Before the lawmakers commenced voting on Tuesday, the candidates for the position of President of the Senate were presented and their biographies read on the floor of the red chamber.

While Senator Ali Ndume presented Akpabio ‘s nomination, Yaris nomination was put forward by Senator Ishaku Abbo.

Akpabio’s emergence is in line with his party, the All Progressives Congress APC zoning arrangement. The APC had zoned the position of the President of the Senate to the South-South region with Assembly, with Akpabio as the preferred candidate while the position of Deputy President of the Senate was decided in favour of the North West with Senator Jubrin Barau as the chosen one.
