AFCON 2025: CAF Names New Official for Nigeria vs Algeria Quarter-Final Tie

By Barth Ikiebe

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed the appointment of a new centre referee for the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Algeria’s Desert Foxes.

CAF had earlier selected Omar Artan to officiate the fixture, but the decision was later reversed following concerns surrounding refereeing decisions at the ongoing tournament.

In an update released on Friday, the African football body announced Senegalese referee, Issa Sy, as the official to take charge of the high-profile encounter.

The quarter-final showdown is scheduled for Saturday in Marrakech, with both teams competing for a spot in the semi-finals of the 2025 AFCON.

Issa Sy has prior experience at the tournament, having served as the Video Assistant Referee during the group-stage match between Morocco and Tanzania.

His appointment is expected to ease tension ahead of the match, which has attracted significant attention due to its stakes and rivalry.

Both Nigeria and Algeria will be eager to progress, with the Super Eagles seeking to continue their strong run in the competition.

CAF hopes the new officiating arrangement will ensure a smooth and fair contest as the teams battle for a place in the last four.
