The Rivers State House of Assembly Thursday, cut short its Christmas recess which was originally scheduled for resumption on January 26 ,2026 and resumed sitting on Thursday, January 8 to begin impeachment proceeding against the governor of the state,Sir Siminialayi Fubara.
The lawmakers in plenary reportedly began a motion of impeachment sponsored by the Majority leader, Major Jack and supported by the Deputy Majority leader,Linda Stewart after levelling charges of gross misconduct against the governor and his Deputy,Prof. Ngozi Odu.
A total of 26 lawmakers reportedly signed the notice of impeachment which, the Speaker,Martins Amaewhule said would be communicated to the governor within 7 days.
Rivers State has 32 constituencies. The 10th Assembly inaugurated in May 2023 , recorded one death and 5 absentees perhaps as a result of renewed political hostilities.
It is the second time in two years the Martins Amaewhule -led Assembly would initiate impeachment process against the governor. The first being on March 14,2025
The 26 lawmakers who are in the grip of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory have since the coming of the” wise men”- the presidential delegation to Rivers State led by Nuhu Ribadu, began another round of what observers deem inconsequential crisis- a grin reminder of the pre – emergency rule imposed on March 18,2025.by President Bola Tinubu
Since late December Wike has launched what he called ” Thank you Visit to LGAS” where he keverages the podium to defame his erstwhile godson in the guise of supporting Mr President’s re- election.
During the visits which are in public domain, Wike had announced how he would handpick a replacement for Fubara in 2027.
The next seven days are critical for the Rivers political class,- those against and in support of the unfolding development and observers.
