President Muhammadu Buhari has written a letter to the Senate requesting the lawmakers to consider his request to confirm Professor Mamood Yakubu for a second term in office as chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC).
Yakubu’s first tenure ended on November 9 2020 Accordingly,,he stepped aside even as the president had approved another term of five years for him.
He handed over to Air Vice Marshall, Ahmed Muazu (RTD) and the remaining byelections in parts of the country have been rescheduled for December 5.
Yakubu had been reportedly linked to N3billion bribe to fix his reappointment,a development some political parties see as unfounded and unfair.
If he is confirmed by the Senate, Yakubu will make history as the only electoral umpire that would serve more than one term in office.
